The Centre

Nestled within the bush and lit by solar power, the retreat centre comprises several buildings set around an attractive courtyard. Two large workshop spaces and a dedicated meditation hall are available for group activities. Delicious vegetarian meals are served in a communal dining room. Simple accommodation is provided for up to 30 people, including a small number of single and double rooms. Te Moata offers a year-round programme of retreats and gatherings.

Four solitary retreat huts with basic living facilities are situated on high ridges deep in the bush and are available for individual retreat. A network of walking tracks allows access to streams, waterfalls, and beautiful stands of native trees.  Special meditation and sacred sites at Te Moata include the Lavender, Rimu and Green Tara Circles and the Labyrinth.

“I have travelled to many retreat centres around the world and Te Moata is a priceless jewel. When I teach here, I often feel that the true teacher is the land, with its lush beauty—the native bush and birds with their melodious songs; the maze of paths, stairs and ropes that lead to mysterious spaces and faraway huts; the ever running lively stream deep in the valley; the sacred labyrinth that calls for our prayers. I love the simplicity of the lifestyle and how Te Moata invites me to slow down and breathe. It’s truly a place of retreat, inviting each of us who goes there to listen to something deep within our being that we all are longing to hear”.
