Te Moata Retreat Huts

4 retreat huts are available for personal retreats. They are all simple bush huts which offer a wonderful opportunity for rest, contemplation and renewal. Unlike many NZ huts, they are set within a dedicated sanctuary, and so give a retreat within a retreat!

Please note the following points if you are considering making a booking –

  1. Each hut is located by walking on bush tracks – a degree of physical fitness is required to reach them, especially as you will need to carry in your own food etc.

  2. Each hut has gas to cook on, mattresses, a long drop toilet, rainwater to drink but no electricity. Two of the huts have woodburning stoves for heating.  We recommend taking in a cellphone, torch, candles, matches, toilet paper, boots and rainproof gear.

  3. Please meet with a community member at the beginning and the end of your stay. The Te Moata property is an area of natural hazards and the Trust takes no responsibility for any harm that may arise as a result of your stay.

  4. For those needing more comfort, cottages around the centre are also sometimes available.

  5. Use of retreat huts is on a dana basis.  Suggested guidelines are $20 per person, per night; and for the cottages around the centre $35 per person, per night.  Please do not let financial restraints stop you from making use of the huts.

Kauri Cabin

20-30 minute walk from the centre, this generous-sized hut is equipped with a stove which makes it ideal for retreating during the colder time of the year. Giving a big view of the Pacific Ocean, it is located close to a stunning grove of Kauri consisting of over 50 trees, one of which is approx 250-300 years old.

The Barn

The largest of the retreat spaces and 15-25 minute walk from the centre, the barn is spacious enough for small groups to use.  With a decent kitchen area and a hot gas powered shower too! Easy access to many of Te Moata’s walking tracks.

The Cliff Kuti

40 minutes walk from the centre and on the edge of a high bluff, the cliff Kuti has very expansive views to the North-east. Small, cosy and close to the nesting area of our rare fernbirds and interesting flora habitats.
